What is a website ?

A website is hosted on a server and is a connexion of three things : the server which contains the informations of the site, the DNS registration that points people at your server, and the Internet which makes it possible. The information on a server exists in computer code that a web browser will display as texts, images, sounds and videos.

There is one technical thing you really need to know, called DNS, because if you control the DNS you ultimately control the website. DNS is very simple to use, and we’ll walk you through setting up a DNS account, and how to keep it secure with a Linux live CD. More about DNS.
